We used several products and supplies in the making this cute marching band shako hat gift box. Below is a list of what we used.

This hat treat box is super simple to put together and very versatile, change the papers to match your school or team!

Assembling The Hat Gift Box Base:

To start with, we put together the inner part that will hold the gift.  This is made of four pieces, two for the sides, and two to close up the bottom.  First, we added glue to the end tabs and connected the side pieces together to create a cylinder.  Don’t fold on the score lines of the tabs, just use them as a guide for where to line up the other pieces.

With the cylinder shape completed, we folded in the bottom tabs and added glue to the inside. We then added one of the circle panels to the bottom.  They are both identical in size so either is fine.  Once the inner one was securely in place, we turned the box over and attached the other circle panel to the bottom.

Assembling The Hat Gift Box Lid:

The outer/top part of the hat starts off the same as the base. Once you have the completed cylinder piece for the top we’ll add the decorations to make it look like a hat.  With this part complete, you’ll note that the hat lid is just a little shorter than the base.

Decorating The Hat:

Start by adding the brim of the hat.  We added glue to the tabs and attached a couple at a time.  We chose to have the corner of the brim start at one of the seams on the hat.  Once you have a couple tabs attached, you can work your way around the brim, a couple tabs at a time.

Next, we attached the decorative wrap to the hat.  To make sure it was lined up straight, we used one of the seams on the hat as a guide.  Add glue to the back and secure it to the hat all the way around.  Once this was secure, we did the same with the decorative strip at the top.

Ideally, we would have used a black shinny paper for the brim.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have any so instead we used Glossy Accents to give the brim that look.  This takes a while to dry but gets that nice shinny appearance.  If you do this, make sure you give it plenty of time to dry.  We let ours sit for about half a day or so.

Once that was completely dry, we added the ribbon above the brim.  There is an optional paper panel you can use instead.  If using that, center it above the brim.  We chose ribbon, so we cut it to reach from end to end on the brim.  To secure the ribbon, we used glue dots rather than our regular craft glue.  It’s cleaner, easier, and sets quicker and more securely.

To cover the ends of the ribbon (or paper strip) we placed the two small circle cut outs, one on each end. We chose Zots for this as well but you could use a different glue if desired.

Finally, we added the eagle symbol to the front.  By waiting until now, you can get it centered between the top decorative strip and your ribbon.  Once that was secure we took some hot glue and attached the feathers to the front of the hat, toward the top.  To cover this connection, there is a larger circle that we glued in place.
